More info by The Gadget Show:

This is a world first. A unique FPS simulator that turns gaming into reality as you move, aim, fire and get shot within a 360-degree immersive environment.

Using a pre-release copy of Battlefield 3 and a team of top technology experts from across Europe we’ve built a truly one of a kind simulator.

Centred on the world’s first, portable omni-directional treadmill (designed by Swedish company MSE Weibull) the simulator lets you control the movements of a Battlefield 3 character with your own body. Other key technology employed includes: 12 paintball markers that allow the player, in real time, to feel the enemy gunfire experienced in the game; a wireless gun system; ambient LED lighting; and an Xbox Kinect camera hack.

The full Gadget Show episode premieres in the UK on Monday 24th October 2011 at 8pm on Channel 5.

BF3 Open Beta Closed

It had to end sometime, and it just did. Thousands of people have joined the beta on PC, Playstation 3 and XBox 360 to get a glance of the game in progress and to help the creators get rid of any last remaining bugs but more importantly to actually improve the game before launch. EA has created a list of the ten most important issues that have been given attention or even have been fixed in the last few weeks, below some highlights.

I cannot play with friends within same squad; squads sometimes get split up onto opposite teams.
There will be improved squad functionality in the retail game (including but not limited to): the ability to create squads prior to launching into a game, sticking with your squad when joining a game and continuing together through future games (If team balance on the server allows it), inviting friends to a squad and changing squads once in game.

Why is the hit detection different from Battlefield: Bad Company 2?
The netcode is one of the many things that we are testing as part of the Open Beta and is not necessarily reflective of the final retail game. The DICE team appreciates and has heard the feedback you’ve provided and is further optimizing online play.

Can we change settings before deployment into a match on a PC?
Yes. Added into the retail game.

BF3 server browser on consoles

Server browers are not common on consoles, but fortunately Battlefield 3 for consoles, will be getting a server browser. Most games on consoles have a “click-to-play” take on online gaming, a match is found based off the user’s latency (connection to the server.) PC gamers have enjoyed the freedoms of server browsers for over a decade and all past PC Battlefields have come with them. Also noted today was that Battlefield 3 PC players will find servers through EA’s Origin server. This style of server joining is quite similar to Steam.

Wikipedia over server browsers:

“Typically, game server browsers retrieve a list of game servers from a master server, measure lag and packet loss between the browser and the game servers, and retrieve server details, such as current players and gameplay rules. This information can be filtered, sorted and displayed and is used to launch and connect a game from the list.
Optionally many game server browsers also support tracking and searching of players, both in- and out-of-game forums, chat and voice communication, advertising for events and management of game servers.”

This news is also confirmed by the official Battlefield Twitter feed.

BF3 Novel to expand Story

The story of Battlefield 3’s campaign will be broadly expanded when a Battlefield 3 themed novel releases on the same day as the game. Battlefield 3: The Russian will be an original novel depicting the life of Dmitri Mayakovsky, after the story in the campaign ends. In the game Dmitri is a legendary and pragmatic GRU operator in the twilight of his Special Forces career, it is unknown whether Dmitri will be a playable character, but it is known that he makes appearances throughout the game. The link to the full story can be found in the description.
